Myths you need to know about the OPT馃槷

By looking at the title of this post you might wonder why should I care about OPT from now on as that is something I should learn about only after graduating once I begin my job search. Well, that鈥檚 not how it works.馃槄 Irrespective of whichever intake you鈥檙e aiming at, this is some information that you should be aware of if you intend to stay back in the US and work there for a few years, especially if your course is a STEM course. Let鈥檚 begin with some trivia for beginners. Students with an F-1 visa who have finished studying for more than nine months are allowed to pursue practical training in their area of study. This time is known as Optional Practical Training (OPT). You may thus apply for OPT as you get closer to graduation, allowing you to work for any firm in the US. Students who hold a degree in the STEM fields鈥擲cience, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics can extend their OPT by an additional 24 months, bringing their total post-graduation OPT period to 36 months i.e. 3 years. But if you think that after completing your course, you will just apply for a job at your convenience and work in the US for at least 3 years then here鈥檚 some information that you should be aware of.馃憞 Once you graduate, you have a period of 3 months or 90 days to find a job. However, there is a little catch here. Let鈥檚 call this catch number #1. By providing you these 90 days, the US government means that you can stay unemployed in the US for 90 days. This means that after graduating if you find a job on the 65th day, then you have 25 days balance left (90 - 65) of your 鈥榓llowed to stay unemployed鈥� days bucket. 馃憠 So suppose you got a job in a company in the US and you work there for 1 year but then the work doesn鈥檛 excite you anymore so you are planning to switch jobs OR if you lose your job due to an unforeseen situation, then you will have only 25 days to find a new job as you have already utilised 65 days from the total 90 day 鈥榓llowed to stay unemployed鈥� days bucket that the US govt gave you. But wait, let鈥檚 go back to the graduation part. Does the OPT period begin the very next day after you graduate? No, not really. You have a period of 60 days from your date of graduation to select a date to start your OPT. So for example, if you started your 2-year course in Aug 2022 and graduated on (say) 15th August 2024, then you have 60 days from 15th August to 15th October to select an OPT start date. This means you get a total of 60 days + 90 days of OPT i.e. 150 days ~ 5 months to find a job and/or stay unemployed. 5 months? Wow! Now you might wonder this way I can relax for the first 4 months, explore the US and begin my job in the 5th month. Sorted life, right?馃槑 Sorry to break your excitement but here comes catch number #2 馃槗馃憠 Say you are someone who thinks like the above. You graduated on 15th Aug 2024 and decided to put your OPT start date as 15th Oct 2024 (i.e. last day of the initial 60-day window). Now imagine after applying to multiple companies, you finally got an interview call on 20th August. You completed all interview rounds and the company wants to hire you as soon as possible (say) by 30th August. However, that would not be possible as your legal OPT start date is 15th October. Thus, you cannot join the company before 15th October irrespective of how big the company is or how soon they need you. Then what is the ideal time to start the OPT date? Tricky, isn鈥檛 it? 馃樀 Short answer is - NETWORKING. As soon as your course begins, start networking with your seniors and college alumni via LinkedIn and/or college groups/programs, if any. Talk to them and understand what strategies they used to find a job and how they set their OPT start dates. In addition to this, at least 3 months before you graduate, connect with the Recruiters on Linkedin who frequently hire from your University or companies where you wish to work. Also, start exploring Career pages and figure out the openings. Aim at getting a few interview calls either before you graduate or in the initial 60-day window so that you will have a clear idea of the date of joining the job and then you can set your OPT start date accordingly. Lastly, if your course offers you internships, try your best to exceed your employer鈥檚 expectations thus improving your chances to get a full-time offer once you graduate.馃挭 Hope this information induces you to level up your networking game and strategise your job search. Home-based tests or tests at the centers, which to prefer?

Home-based tests were introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic, due to the unavailability of the test centers. Right now, GRE and TOEFL can be taken at home. IELTS on the other hand, has increased the number of test centers for easier accessibility. Home-Based Tests: The at home test is identical to a test taken at a test center and is taken on your own computer at home. All at home tests are monitored by a human proctor online through ProctorU. At home testing is available around the clock, seven days a week. Requirements: * You must be alone in a room with no one else entering during the test. * You must close all doors in the room before beginning the test. The room must be quiet and well lit. Surroundings should be clear. Your table and chair are positioned so that the door to the room will be visible to the proctor. Your computer and keyboard must be on a desk or other tabletop surface. * Notes can only be taken on a small desktop white board with erasable marker or a sheet of paper inside a transparent sheet protector, with an erasable marker. Pencils and pens are not permitted. At the end of the test, you will need to show the proctor that all notes have been erased. * You need to be dressed appropriately with your ears visible to the proctor throughout the exam. Avoid wearing any jewelry or other accessories. Face masks may not be worn during check in or any part of the at home testing experience. * For any technical issue, you can wave to your proctor and get it clarified. Pros: * You can take the test anytime. If you are a night owl, you can take it at 2 AM and if you are an early riser, at 4 AM! * All you need is a strong internet connection and some privacy. You can take the test in the comfort of your home. Anxious students can relax and prepare. * You can avoid travelling to and from the test center. Cons: * Need to make sure your table, surroundings are clearly visible to the proctor. In case you have pets or young children at home, it would be difficult to cultivate a silent room. * You will need to have the right equipment and uninterrupted internet connection throughout the test duration. At center Exams: Pros: * You need not worry about the equipment for taking the test or the internet connection. Best choice for aspirants who don't have proper connections or coming from a place where internet stability is still a major concern. Cons: * Tests are available only at slots of time, as they have only a limited number of seats and the tests must be scheduled at the daytime. * Unfamiliar environment and equipment: The PC might be older, and the keyboards might be jerky. Also, sometimes the AC might be blasting off and other times it would be hot. So, if you are taking the test at the test centers, do remember to dress in layers to tackle any situation. To pick the right one between the GRE at home and the testing center for study abroad, it is necessary for you to start with giving practice tests. If you have a proper internet connection with the required exam equipment and the privacy of your own room, then go for the home test. And if you don't have the proper equipment and won't have much time to buy it, or if you have young children at home, then the regular test is the best option. At home results should reach you 10-15 days from the date of the exam. There are many students asking if GRE at home test scores are being cancelled. That should not be the case, as the scores are cancelled only if there has been misconduct, plagiarism or testing irregularities. If ETS cancels your score, they would be sending the reason why so. If they don鈥檛, you can always email them and request for the reason. Sometimes, the scores might take longer than 15 days to reach because of the number of students taking up the tests. If one does not receive their scores by 20 or more days, they would need to send in an email raising concern to ETS. Important thing to remember is that you need to give ample time for the tests. Do not try to give them only a month before the start of the application process. Give 1-2 months spare in case you might need to give the test again, or if there has been a discrepancy in the scores. #examprep #GREprep #TOEFL
