When Should You Take the SAT?

There is no exact right time to take the SAT, because students usually take it between classes 11 and 12. Some even opt for the SAT once high school is over, giving them ample time to prepare for the exam. Since school work and board exams get really hectic, time management is an issue.

Take the SAT exam 4-5 months before your college application deadlines. Since board exams in India are over by April, this gives you ample time to retake the exam if necessary.  You also need to have enough time to prepare your college applications, write essays, and take the English proficiency tests. Since this will be the first time, it may get a little overwhelming, but don’t worry, thousands of students do it, and you can do it too!

You can also take a PSAT before the original SAT to help you better understand the process, format and structure of the paper.

How to Choose the Right SAT Exam Date?

The best way to choose the right SAT date is when you are ready for it. Prepare your application schedule, and look through the dates for the year. If you’re still in high school, the process will be hectic, but with time management and help, you can get through it.

If you're planning to apply to universities for Fall 2026, aim to take your SAT within the next few months. Consider the 7th June or 23rd August 2025 test dates. This will give you ample time to focus on the rest of your application process.

If you’re done with school and are taking a gap year, or if you are taking the SAT later for any reason, you can choose the exam date according to your convenience.

When is the Next SAT Exam 2025?

The next SAT exam will be held on May 3, 2025. Register by 18th April, 2025. In case you miss that, you can also do a late registration up to 22nd April, 2025. If you miss the SAT on May, the next SAT date will be on 7 June, 2025, for which you must register by May 22, 2025.

The SAT exam is held 8 times a year, so even if you miss one or two dates, you can always take it on the next slot. If you need to retake the exam, that is also possible.

How to Register for the SAT Exam?

You can register for the SAT in 2 ways - Online and by mail. When doing it online, create an account on College Board, select your date and the test centre depending on your location and convenience. Pay the fee, and voila! You’re registered for the SAT.

The SAT registration involves 5-6 steps, so make sure you don’t miss out on any step and complete the process seamlessly.

Here are the steps you need to follow:

  • Step 1: Go to the www.collegeboard.org website and create an account.
  • Step 2: Fill in your necessary details - personal and academic information.
  • Step 3: Choose your convenient date and test centre.
  • Step 4: Upload a recent, passport-size photograph for verification. This is essential because your photo will be present on the SAT ticket needed on the exam date.
  • Step 5: Pay the application fee, which is USD 111 (or INR 9500). Pay it securely via credit or debit card. If you’re eligible for a fee waiver, this is when you apply for it.
  • Step 6: Review your application, double-check all details and submit. When confirmed, you’ll get an email with your SAT ticket and test centre details.

In case you’re registering via mail, you need to procure the “Student Registration Guide for the SAT” from your school counsellor. This usually contains a form and a return envelope. Fill out the form, attach a recent passport-size photograph, pay your fee through a demand draft, and mail the application.

ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Tip: Make sure you print your SAT exam ticket and carry it along with you on the day of the exam. This will avoid any last-minute hassles and help you with easy access to the exam centre.
